Domain Names FAQ

I need to register a .com.au domain but dont have a business number, can i still register it now?
In short the answer is no. AUDA who regulates the .AU domain space has the requirement of having the domain registrant linked to a valid registered business. The quick way to get a ABN is to register for one by visiting here, its free and you do it online. Once you have a ABN you may register a domain name, however you should also make sure you register the business name with Office of Fair Trading should you not want to run into trouble later on with domain disputes..

Can i transfer my existing domain to Crikey?
Yes!. In the case of a .AU domain you will need your domain name password, this can be obtained here by having it sent to the registrant. If by chance the registrant email address shown at Ausregistry is incorrect or not yours, or even worse its your dodgy disgruntled web designers or old hosts email address then please contact us for suggested solution to get this corrected. A .au domain transfer usually takes around 3 days to complete. You can transfer a .AU domain when it has expired, as long as the registrant email address is still working and you have the password. The transfer will renew the domain.

In the case of a global domain, you will need the domain EPP/Auth code to initiate the transfer. Your current domain provider will need to provide this. Sometimes you can self-serve this from their site, other times you will need to beg and plead with them to have it sent to you.. Again if you have issues getting information out of your current provider get in contact with Crikey.

How long does it take to register a domain?
A .com.au domain order, if submitted correctly with proper business registration details can be registered within the hour during regular business hours, .AU domains registrations over the weekend maybe delayed till the next business day. A global domain name (.com, .net) will be registered usually within the hour once payment is made for the order.

Do i need to purchase hosting to register a domain name?
No, if you dont have a website to host yet or you dont require emails just yet then you can simply just register and secure the domain name. You can later on order hosting and have that setup. You also dont need to be hosting with Crikey, you can host anywhere you like and still have your domain through Crikey, no worries mate!

How many domains can i register?
There is no limit to the amount of domains you can register.

I changed my mind about the domain i registered, can i cancel and get a refund?
No sorry, domain names are non-refundable once registered

What if i dont renew my domain on the due date?
Unfortunately we cannot control the domain expiry date, once its reached the domain will expire and any services attached to it will shortly after start to fail. We cant give payment extensions on domains. Its adviseable that you renew your domain at least 3 days prior to expiry to avoid any delay in renewal. If you dont renew your domain within 21 days of expiry, you may not be able to renew it until it expires and gets deleted at the registry level.

Can i register a .com.au domain for just 1 year please?
No, .AU domains can only be registered for 2 years at a time. This is a rule set by AUDA and must be adhered to.
